Weekly Continuity and Construction Communication (as of July 17, 2015)

Look at our Construction Site!

Here are some fun pictures of the construction happenings around the site. Seriously, the VPR studios are an island in the middle of a giant construction project!

So much dirt. Everywhere. Mounds of it.
Gas masks and bottles unearthed from the digging.

Staff at 365 Troy Ave. Preparing for Big Construction Week

For all of you who read last week's email and blog post, you know that next week is going to be a BIG week of construction with multiple projects and an abundance of noise, dust, and other fairly standard construction impact. Our on-air product teams have been having "fire drills" that weren't necessarily easy, but they offered the proverbial "learning opportunities" and that's always useful. It seems that largely, we are ready to put great sound out over the airwaves next week with listeners hardly noticing that our main studios are in the middle of a full-blown construction site. Vermont Edition will be on-air from our Montpelier studios and potentially using Studio A instead of Master Control, Classical staff is working extra hours to voice track as needed, prerecording their shows.

Additionally, for all staff around the 365 Troy Avenue facility, the construction impact may also mean shifting and moving some things as needed. For the folks in Membership and Major Giving, a good deal of time is spent talking on the phone to our members every day (thank you for that!) so construction noise can be a challenge in a different way than it is for the on-air people. As I mentioned last week, we are hoping that anybody that needs to adjust or shift their work routine will be able to figure out the right solutions with their team. I encourage everyone around 365 Troy to toss out creative ideas for problem solving in your department if you find that the construction activity is prohibiting you from getting your work done in a happy and healthy way.

A final note of recognition. It's really cool to see so many different people and departments coming together to create this flexibility for the construction project. It shows some agility and that's a huge asset for getting through both tough and exciting things together. Nice job everyone!

Flynn Radio Camp coming next week

The Flynn Radio Camp kids will be at 365 Troy in the Performance Studio during our big construction week. They don't do much recording so we aren't expecting that to present any sound difficulties, but keep it in mind for scheduling purposes. It's always fun to see kids learning how to make radio!

Parking Update

The parking lot that is being built on the north side of the building should be completed no less than two weeks from today. At that time, staff can expect to use some of that lot in addition to the temporary gravel parking area in the front of the building.

Construction Activity expected for the weeks beginning
July 20, July 27, and August 3, 2015

POTENTIAL NOISE IMPLICATIONS:
  • Full court press coming up. Nearly eliminating use of Master & Talk from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Heads Up: When steel starts to go up, beginning of August, we’ll have a new noise to deal with - loud impacting wrench.
  • The same work will be going on the week of the 27th as the week of the 20th - just minus the vibratory roller, and further from the building itself.
