Welcome to July!
Today, five quick updates, one admonition. And if you read through the gentle scolding, you'll be rewarded with many photos of new construction at the very end.
Green Room
Reminder: this space will be under renovation beginning next Monday, July 11 and lasting probably through the end of July. The work will be sporadically noisy, and noisy work will be planned between the hours of 9:06-11:30 a.m., 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Today, movers are taking everything out of the space to make way for the work. Vending machines will be in the TOEF wing, and everything else (staff mailboxes, required HR postings, etc) will be in the library/community room off of the lobby.

There has been a intractable air quality issue in Studio One Control, where VPR Classical has been broadcasting for many weeks. The root of the problem is the "off gassing" that happens when new materials release a strong chemical odor. This is normal (think "new car smell") and is supposed to fade out pretty quickly. In the case of Studio One Control, it's persisted for many weeks now and is likely exacerbated by the *HVAC system not working as intended. Brian is working with all of the contractors and vendors who've installed equipment in that room to speed this process up and get it to normal as soon as possible; and a group will meet today to see if VPR Classical can go on air from a different studio. In the meantime, Kari has been voice tracking some of her air shifts elsewhere and this massive fan was brought in to push a huge amount of air through the room. It ran over the weekend for 72 hours of high-powered ventilation.
* Yes, they are also looking other HVAC issues around the building - this one is the most pressing right now.

Installation of the custom acoustic door is happening now, as you may have heard. (Literally.) This is the hammering and nail-gunning we mentioned in the last update; this work will continue all week.
Television:
Comcast was here last week to get our cable back up and running, which is why you've seen temporary TVs running in the Green Room and newsroom. Large permanent screens will be installed this week in the newsroom. Come join us for afternoon soaps and regularly scheduled outrage at whatever CNN is doing.
Outdoors
Two new names to get used to: "Staff Patio" and "Front Patio" -- both are now installed! Staff patio is on the south side of the building, just outside the exit by Brian's desk. Front patio is at the former front door to VPR, where the Development teams will be located.

So I have this piece of office equipment, and while it's occasionally useful, it's not something I want on my desk all the time. And you know what, someone else might want to use it, too! But I'm not sure where to put it. So, while no one is looking, I'm going to casually stroll by the stairs leading to the Crow's Nest and ever-so-nonchalantly slide this item onto the countertop there and keep walking. Kind of like a spy dropping a stolen a file. Or a rat spreading typhus.
If you can see yourself in this description, please return to the Crow's Nest stairs, retrieve the item you left there and find a a proper place for it. If you're unsure where it should go (which, let's face it, is probably the case, otherwise you wouldn't have left it where you did) then you can ask Laurie for guidance. Storage for all things will be easier when the entire building is open for use. For now, try hard not to leave things collecting in piles.

DeleteHmm. Good point, probably a regrettable choice on my part. What I was really thinking about was the epic typhus episode of Little House on the Prairie when the whole town gets ill from cheap, spoiled flour. It's a morality tale of greed brought to heel by a community that cares for its sick and dying through bravery and perseverance. THAT is what I should have said in relaying the request to not leave junk lying around.

DeleteIs there a possibility that all of the equipment on that shelf actually does "belong" there (insomuch as it doesn't have a place it belongs) and that it just needs to be (and look) more organized?
