Continuity and Construction Update (as of October 16, 2015)

I can see Russia from my office!

While Sarah Palin didn't actually say she could see Russia from her house (Tina Fey gets that credit), Cody Fiala noted this week on a construction tour that it turns out we can see Russia from our new work digs. And Korea, and Germany too! Well, we can see things made there anyway.

If you have gone on a construction tour recently you may have noticed that our building's steel beams have scrawls with countries from all around the globe. That's because the country of origin is written on each of them. Fact: the writing will stay on the beams and we'll be able to see it as long as it lasts. Have a look at Cody's pics below.

Opera+Construction=Odd but fun

During this week's construction meeting, the people inside the trailer heard a sound that isn't standard for construction sites. It sounded like opera singers! Thinking back to Pete Nelson's interview, I am guessing he would rather hear opera singers than the crunch sound of a machine hitting something. The construction group stopped their meeting to peer outside and Joe Tymecki recorded what they heard. (Hint: really great opera singers that were warming up for a live performance.) I tried for a short eon to get the audio onto this blog post and several workarounds later still came up empty. If you want to hear it, leave a comment on this post and I will email it to you!

What's on the construction docket for the coming week?

The report of anticipated construction work includes many things. Here is what we can expect in the coming week or so:

• More steel, wall panels and roofing happening
• Framing work of cafe and reception area
• Masonry work
• Satellite dish going back on the roof of technology wing Monday morning
• Removal of slate from south side existing roof, then applying standing seam roof.  NOTE: This work will have more of a noise impact on the Admin wing of the building. Expect this to last about 3 weeks. 

Continuity Group - Heads Up

Attendees at this week's Continuity Group decided that it's time now to gather the full group back together for a brainstorming about all the questions, ideas, and other details that must be worked through to transition over the coming six months. We are going to be experiencing a wave of all-hands-on-deck work to sort through how we can best get to the other side of March. The Continuity Group encourages all staff to email group members with questions about how things will work as we think about the transitions. We have a "parking lot" to put all your questions so that we can tackle them along the way. For example, we already know there is a question about how to book live performances that are planned for the Spring. Can you think of questions like that for the area you are working in? Let us know!

Parking, parking, parking

There is good news and less good news. Staff and guests can keep parking in half of the newly paved area that has been used this past week (on the membership side of the building)! We can't use the big parking lot (on the tower side of the building) at all yet. But, we CAN use the newly paved driveway entrance to get to our gravel and front of building parking areas. So, to try and clarify parking for next week, here is where you can park: front of the building in the old paved area, front of the building gravel parking area, and newly paved area on the side of the building where the Development team sits. Please don't park on any of the newly paved area that is 1) huge, and 2) located on the radio tower side of the building. That's because construction equipment and trucks will be coming and going out of there all day every day - it's part of their major staging area for construction work.
