Continuity Update for Oct 6

Hey all! Welcome to October! And dare I say, welcome to the last month of blog posts from your loving, faithful Continuity Team. The end of our building transition is in sight!

Construction updates:
"Construction" now feels like a misnomer because we are in the final bits and details of paint touch-ups and furniture installations. Next week will be the last week that Neagley & Chase will be on site, and they may be done as early as Wednesday.

• People and furniture are on the move: the 90-degree desks that were recently in the news center are now in what Todd endearingly refers to as "the South Lobe" (what others may call "Development"). The accounting and admin staff have taken up residence in their permanent workstations, with the exception of Lise and Brian who are floating till Oct. 20. 
• The HVAC system in the historic building briefly went kerfluey (technical term) but the necessary part to get it back online and working correctly will be here by Friday.
• Did you notice that the frosted coating has been removed from the Green Room window which looks into the performance Studio? It's so cool to have that line of sight back! You can also now ogle the lights and whirly gigs in the Term Room, thanks to the removal of that window frosting, too.
• We don't have a date for the installation of the sliding door between the Green Room and Talk/Master. We'll update you when we know more.  
• Exterior front door -- still reliably hard to open. We're waiting on parts. Same for the new staff entrance on the north side of the building. 
• There is new furniture upstairs in the rooms at either end of the former newsroom! It was free! The space that used to be JVH's office is called the Wellness Room and the space that used to be occupied by Lynne & The Millenials is now called the Hay Loft.

So much is going on with VPR Classical!
The CDs have sat quietly in boxes in the Performance Studio for all these weeks, and today they have moved to the newly renovated Music Library. The 37,000 CDs will be reshelved today and tomorrow, no small task!

Meanwhile, the Classical hosts have been training with the engineers to learn the new operations in Studio B, which got a physical and technological facelift. On Monday, VPRCL will be fully automated as the team says goodbye to their temporary home in Studio One Control, and then starting Tuesday, they will be back on the air from Studio B!

New names: commit this to memory
All of the common spaces have now been named, inaugurating a period of time in which we will all be asking, "Wait, what are we calling Small Mezzanine now?" Brian will hang a large building map in the kitchen that shows the new names of all these spaces. In the next two weeks or so, Todd will change the names of meeting spaces in Zimbra. So, get a jump on learning the new names as soon as you can:

Brainstorm - what do we do with all this space?!?!
Seriously you guys, there is A LOT of space left in the news center without our dear neighbors sitting there anymore. We will take a look at the floor plan in November -- after all the priority work of moving coworkers into their new spaces is totally finished.

But in anticipation that we will want to rejigger the use of space, let's start brainstorming possible scenarios. Use the comments section below to get started now, and be on the lookout for some kind of white board /graffiti wall where we can capture ideas. Shifting the furniture to fill the space may seem like an obvious solution, but because our desks are wired with electric and data, that's actual not a cheap or easy option. So before we jump right to that, let's take some time to have fun thinking of what else is possible. (One caveat we can put out there now: the budget is small to zero.)

Some of you have asked, why is the Vocal Booth is crazy cold all the time? Laurie has worked with those folks who use this room the most to teach them how to set the thermostat in there. If you need help with this, see Laurie! Please leave the door to this room closed always to keep the HVAC from getting out of whack.
